 RULERS AND BUILDINGS

Types of buildings

Between the eighth and the eighteenth

centuries kings and their officers built

two kinds of structures:

  1. The first were forts, palaces,

garden residences and tombs –

safe, protected and grandiose

places of rest in this world.

  1. The second were structures

meant for public activity including

 temples, mosques, tanks, wells,

 caravan series and bazaars.

These structures were built between the

 eighth and the eighteenth centuries,

Qutub minar was built around 1199

by Qutbuddin Aibak. There was an

Arabic inscription written on it. The surface

of the minar is curved and angular.

Placing an inscription on such a surface

 required great precision.

Merchants also built temples,

mosques and wells. However,

 domestic architecture – large

mansions (havelis) of merchants – have

survived only from the eighteenth century.

Engineering Skills and Construction

  • From the 7th and 10th centuries

 architects started adding more rooms,

 doors and windows to buildings.

Roofs, doors and windows were

still made by placing a horizontal

beam across two vertical columns,

a style of architecture called “trabeate”

 or “corbelled”.

  • Between the 8th and 13th centuries

the trabeate style was used in the

construction of temples, mosques,

tombs and in buildings attached to

large stepped-wells (baolis).

Now in 12th century there were two

 technologies and styles were famous:

  •  (1) The weight of the superstructure

above the doors and windows was

sometimes carried by arches. This

 architectural form was called “arcuate”.

  • (2) Limestone cement was increasingly

used in construction. This was very

high-quality cement, which, when

mixed with stone chips, hardened

 into concrete. This made construction

of large structures easier and faster.

Building Temples, Mosques and Tanks

In Hindus Rajas

Temples and mosques were

beautifully constructed because

 they were places of worship.

They were also meant to

demonstrate the power,

wealth and devotion of the patron.

The king took the god’s name

because it was auspicious and

He wanted to appear like a god.

Example: Rajarajeshvara temple

An inscription mentions that it

was built by King Rajarajadeva

for the worship of his god, Rajarajeshvaram.

The temple was a miniature model of

the world ruled by the king and his allies.

As they worshipped their deities together

in the royal temples, it seemed as if they

brought the just rule of the gods on earth.

Islamic kings

In Islam, kings didn't claim

they were incarnations of

god but Persian court chronicles

described the Sultan as the “Shadow of God”

.Its written in an inscription-Quwwat al-Islam

mosque explained that God chose Alauddin

as a king because he had the qualities of

Moses and Solomon, the great lawgivers of the past.

Whenever new dynasty kings come they build a

place of worship to demonstrate their power and

closeness to God.

Rulers also offered special facilities

to the learned people mainly who

had deep belief in religion and tried

to transform their capitals and cities

into great cultural centers that brought

fame to their rule and their realm.

At that time, it was believed that a

 king who followed justice would

never face a shortage of rain.

Rulers construct tanks and

reservoirs to preserve precious

water. Sultan Iltutmish won

universal respect for constructing

a large reservoir just outside Dehli-i-Kuhna

It was called the Hauz-i-Sultani or the

“King’s Reservoir”. Many times these

tanks and reservoirs were part of a

temple, mosque (note the small tank in the Jami Masjid )

or a gurdwara (a place of worship and congregation for Sikhs.

Why were Temples Targeted?

Earlier when one king used to attack

another king’s kingdom they first destroyed

their worship’s places because kings

showed their faith, power and wealth

through worship’s place. Here are some

evidences of temples were targeted.

In the 9th century when the Pandyan king Shrimara

Shrivallabha invaded Sri Lanka and defeated the king,

Sena I (831-851), the Buddhist monk and chronicler.

Dhammakitti noted: “he removed all the valuables.

The statue of the Buddha made entirely of gold in

the Jewel Palace ... and the golden images in the

various monasteries – all these he seized.

Then Sinhalese ruler, Sena II, ordered his

general to invade Madurai, the capital of

the Pandyas. The Buddhist chronicler

noted that the expedition made a special

effort to find and restore the gold statue

of the Buddha.

In the early 11th century, when the Chola

king Rajendra I built a Shiva temple in his

capital he filled it with prized statues

seized from defeated rulers.

Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni attacked

the temples of defeated kings and

looted their wealth and idols,  especially

the one at Somnath – he tried to win

credit as a great hero of Islam.

Gardens, Tombs and Forts

Under the Mughals, architecture

became more complex. Babur,

Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, and

especially Shah Jahan were

personally interested in literature,

art and architecture.

Babur described his interest in

planning and laying out formal

gardens, placed within rectangular

walled enclosures and divided into

four quarters by artificial channels

.These gardens were called chahar bagh.

Akbar's architects turned to the tombs of his

Central Asian ancestor, Timur. The central

towering dome and the tall gateway (pishtaq)

became important aspects of Mughal architecture,

first visible in Humayun’s tomb.

It was built in the tradition known as “eight

paradises” or hasht bihisht – a central

hall surrounded by eight rooms.

The building was constructed with

red sandstone, edged with white marble.

Shah Jahan’s reign witnessed a huge

amount of construction activity especially

in Agra and Delhi. The ceremonial halls

of public and private audience placed within

a large courtyard, these courts were also

described as chihil sutun or forty-pillared halls.

His throne was frequently described as the qibla,

the direction faced by Muslims at prayer, since

everybody faced that direction when court was

in session. The idea of the king as a

representative of God on earth.

New court in the red fort was built

on the instructions of shah jahan

where he emphasised, The connection

between royal justice and the imperial court

. The emperor’s throne was a series of

pietra dura inlays that depicted the legendary

Greek god Orpheus playing the lute.

Shah Jahan built his capital in Agra,

a city where the nobility had constructed

their homes on the banks of the river Yamuna.

These were set in the midst of formal gardens

constructed in the chahar bagh format.

Taj mahal was constructed on the bank of

yamuna by choice of shah jahan. Marbles

were used to construct the Taj mahal, the

river and the garden was to its south. He

also constructed Shahjahanabad in delhi.

He specially favoured his eldest son Dara Shukoh –

were given access to the river. All others had to

construct their homes in the city away from the

River Yamuna.

Region and Empire

Construction activities increased

between the eighth and eighteenth centuries.

There were sharing of construction’s ideas

among different regions and empire like:

In Vijayanagara, for example, the elephant

stables of the rulers were gly influenced by

the style of architecture found in the adjoining

Sultanates of Bijapur and Golconda.

 In Vrindavan, near Mathura, temples

were constructed in architectural styles

that were very similar to the Mughal palaces

in Fatehpur Sikri. (THIS DATA MAY BE

TEMPERED BECAUSE MATHURA AND

VRINDAVAN WERE ANCIENT CITIES

AND HAS VERY IMPORTANT ROLE

IN HINDUISM ON THE BASIS OF HISTORY

,TEMPLES WOULD HAVE  BUILT FIRST

AND THEN MUGAL’S BUILDINGS).

Mughal rulers were particularly skilled

in adapting regions. Like In Bengal,

the local rulers had developed a roof

that was designed to resemble a thatched hut.

The Mughals liked this “Bangla dome” so

much that they used it in their architecture.

In Akbar’s capital at Fatehpur Sikri many

of the buildings show the influence of the

architectural styles of Gujarat and Malwa.

Outside of India

Churches that touched the skies

From the twelfth century onwards,

attempts began in France to build

churches that were taller and lighter

than earlier buildings. This architectural

style, known as Gothic, was distinguished

by high pointed arches, the use of

stained glass, often painted with scenes

drawn from the Bible, and flying buttresses.

Tall spires and bell towers which were visible

from a distance were added to the church.

One of the best-known examples of this

architectural style is the church of Notre Dame

in Paris, which was constructed through several

decades in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Class-9 English N.C.E.R.T book- Moments , Chapter- 2 The Adventures of Toto-Summary and Questions and Answers

 The Adventures of Toto

It is the story of the narrator's grandfather and

his pet baby monkey. One day his grandfather took a

little red monkey for five rupees from a Tonga rider

to add a new member in his little zoo.

Toto was a pretty monkey. His bright eyes

sparkled with mischief beneath deep-set

eyebrows, pearl white teeth and a tail

acting as third hand but his hand

to take his favorite dish was

dry due to keeping in the sun for years.

Toto’s presence was kept secret

from grandmother by grandfather because

she got annoyed whenever he brought

any new bird or animal to home.

So Grandfather and narrator  put

him away in a little closet opening

into the bedroom wall, where he was

tied securely — or so we thought  —

to a peg fastened into the wall.

Toto tried to escape from the room

for which he broke the peg and

tore down the wall paper and

narrator’s school blazer to make

rope due to this and by afraid of fear

of grandmother, grandfather took toto

to to a big cage in the servants’ quarters

where he lived with other pets-a tortoise,

a pair of rabbits, a tame squirrel and

pet goat. That night toto wouldn't allow

any of them to sleep.

Then grandfather took toto and tortoise

to Dehradun to get his monthly pension.

Toto was kept in black knitted bag

and a tortoise in his pocket, while Ticket

collector thought toto was a dog and

asked to take a ticket for toto on the train.

Toto was unable to get out that strong bag.

When toto was expected by grandmother,

he got his place in a stable with nana

who is the pet donkey of house.

Toto and Nana become friends.

In winter the narrator's grandmother

gives a hot water tub to bathe and bathing

in hot water is favorite toto. He bathes in hot

water till the water doesn't get cold, after this

he dries himself in the kitchen's fire. In this whole

process someone laughed at him, Toto's  got hurt

and won't take bath again.

One day toto about to burn himself,

grandmother kept water to boil in

kettle and toto thought, it water for

bathing and he opened the lid of

cattle to sit in water and set himself

in kettle till his neck, it was good till

water is hot now it has started boiling,

now when toto find cold sat down again.

He continued hopping up and down for

some time, until Grandmother arrived

and hauled him, half-boiled, out of the kettle.

Like this toto is full mischievous brain,

one day he took dish full of pullav to

eat and sat on tree and he always make

hole in narrator’s aunties dresses,

he damages dishes, tears curtains, clothes

and wall paper, so grandfather did want to

keep such pet plus he was not able to bear

loss anymore so he sold him back to Tonga puller in 3 rupees.
