NCERT Class 7 English – Chapter 5: Golu Grows a Nose,
Golu Grows a Nose
This is a story of a baby elephant named Golu whose nose is small not like today's elephants plus he had many doubts in his mind due to which he kept asking questions from different animals who lived near to him. Like he asked from a giraffe why he has spots on him, from an ostrich why it can't fly and why hippopotamus always has red eyes, but nobody has answers to his questions.
One day golu decided to see crocodile and wanted to know what it eats in his food so he asked mynah bird where he could find crocodile then mynah told he would find crocodile at the banks of the great, grassy Limpopo river and he left his home with lots of food towards river to see crocodile.
On the way to the river he found a python to which he again asked the same question about crocodiles but the python didn't answer. Finally he reached the banks of the great, grassy Limpopo where he saw a wood log but it winked at him, then he found out it was a crocodile when he lifted out its half tail.
Golu asked what it eats for dinner and crocodile tricked him to call near to it, to eat golu and crocodile held his nose tightly but suddenly the python came and told golu to pull his nose out of mouth of crocodile else it will pull golu in the river and ate him. Python also helped golu to get his nose out of the mouth of crocodile and during this pull and push moments, Golu nose got stretched upto 5 inches.
Golu waited for 2 days for his nose to get back to its position but it didn't and he was disappointed. Then python told he 3 benefits of having long nose are:
Now golu can pluck a large bundle of grass.
Golu scooped up some mud from the bank and slapped it on his head in hot summers.
Golu can spat or kill flies which disturb him.
After listening to the python, Golu got satisfied with his nose and happily went back to home.

This chapter is about an incident described by a homoeopathy doctor at night, he lived in a rented room in the village and just set up his clinic in the village. One summer’s night he returned from dinner to his house where there was no electricity so he lit up the kerosene oil lamp for light in the room.
There were lots of rats in the room which ran on the beam of the house from there. Doctor told me he earns very less plus he had only 60rs in his suitcase. Along with some shirts and dhotis, I also possessed one solitary black coat which I was then wearing.
Doctor’s room has two windows. It was an outer room with one wall facing the open yard. It had a tiled roof with long supporting gables that rested on the beam over the wall. There was no ceiling. He made his bed which was close to the wall and laid on it but wasn’t able to sleep and then he went out to the veranda for a little air.
Then he got back to the room and opened the book naming the Materia Medica on the table where a lamp, a big mirror and a comb were kept. Now he started staring himself in the mirror and began to think, he thought earlier he was a great admirer of beauty so he had to look good and handsome to make his presence felt because he is bachelor and doctor.
Once again he looked into mirror and thought now he should shave everyday and keep very thin moustache on face to look handsome after all he is bachelor and doctor too, one more he looked into mirror and smiled and he decided to smile everyday to look more attractive and handsome all this because he is doctor and bachelor too but there is some sound is coming above of him.
One more beautiful thought came to mind: to get married to a fat lady, so when he made any mistake she would not be able to catch him. Suddenly there came a dull thud as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground. When he turned,he saw a fat snake wriggling over the back of the chair and landed on his shoulder.
The snake slithered along my shoulder and coiled around my left arm above the elbow. The hood was spread out and its head was hardly three or four inches from his face. Doctor turned to stone. But his mind was very active. In these difficult times he remembered the creator of this world and this universe. God was there.
He cant move a little because a little moment can end his life and he also didn't have any medicines for snake bite to save his life. Then by God grace the snake turned its head. It looked into the mirror and saw its reflection. Now the snake unwound itself from his arm and crept onto the table and moved towards the mirror, the snake started to stare at itself.
Doctor was wondering whether the snake is male or female. As soon as the snake got down the doctor ran like never before to his friend's place. There he smeared himself with oil all over, took a bath and changed into fresh clothes. He forgot about his home in the morning when he went home to move from there but he found the thief had looted his stuff and left very few things while as an insult the thief left his thirty vest, The doctor said, “My vest, the dirty one. The fellow had such a sense of cleanliness...! The rascal could have taken it and used it after washing it with soap and water.”
