NCERT -Chapter 2 , Class 5th , Look Around

A Snake charmer's story

This is the story of snake keepers of India who are also called snake charmer's because they can catch any dangerous snake by hand, they play a flute or instrument called 'been' to charm the snake and to make them dance. They are mainly called tribals or banjaras people who roam from one place to another in their groups or kabiilaah.

Now let's understand the life of a snake charmer, naming aryanath who's kabiilaah name is Kalbeliyas, his grandfather Roshan Nathji very popular in his tribe for catching many poisonous snakes. He also told his grandfather and great grandfather were always be saperas or snake charmers. They used to move from village to village carrying their snakes in bamboo baskets.

Whenever they passed or hault in a village for some time, people gathered around them to see snake dance and various types of snakes with them. They also keep lots of medicines related to snake bites with them which they made from various medical plants from forest on their way, as this is their generational occupation so they have knowledge about these jaadi buuties .

They give these medicines to village people whenever they want for snake bites, even people call them in absence of a medical representative to give them a cure and identify which snake has bitten the person. In exchange village people give them money or food grains .

Now Aryanath is discussing how the government's  law of wildlife conservation changed their lives. How illegal killing of wild animals for their skins, horns and hairs etc have made keeping snakes illegal. He was saying it's very difficult to earn livelihood for them because snake dancing shows and selling medicine all have reduced drastically.

Government thinks we people kill snakes and sell their venom and skin, while they are our treasurer. We give snakes as a gift to our daughters as a gift in their marriages, and we have a dance on snake pattern.

We want this generation to know about snakes with children who live in towns and cities. Tell them that they should not be scared of snakes. Help them to recognise poisonous snakes.Tell them how snakes are friends of the farmers. They eat the rats in the fields, otherwise rats would eat the crops.
