'ताँबा' गुलाबी रंग और लाल रंग की एक चमकदार धातु है। यह चाँदी के अतिरिक्त विद्युत की सबसे अच्छी सुचालक है। विद्युत सुचालक होने के कारण इसका प्रयोग विद्युत यंत्र 'कैलोरीमीटर' आदि बनाने में किया जाता है। भारत में ताँबे का प्रयोग काफ़ी लम्बे समय से किया जाता रहा है। वैदिक काल में इसका प्रथमत: प्रयोग किया गया था। झारखण्ड राज्य का सिंहभूमि ज़िला ताँबा उत्खनन की दृष्टि से सर्वाधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण है। यहाँ से उड़ीसा राज्य तक लगभग 140 कि.मी. लम्बी पट्टी में ताँबा मिलता है। राजस्थान का खेतड़ी ताँबा क्षेत्र सिन्धु घाटी सभ्यता काल से ही ताँबा उत्खनन का प्रमुख क्षेत्र रहा है।
