भौतिक परिवर्तन का एक उदाहरण -

□ Dissolving of sugar in water.(पानी में चीनी का घोलना.)

Physical changes affect the from of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition. In general, a physical change is using physical means. For example, sugar dissolved in water can be recovered by allowing the water to evaporate.
भौतिक परिवर्तन (Physical change) की संकल्पना (कांसेप्ट) रासायनिक परिवर्तन की संकल्पना से भेद (अन्तर) स्पष्ट करने के लिये की गयी है। भौतिक परिवर्तन के अन्तर्गत वे सभी परिवर्तन आते हैं जिनमें पदार्थ की रासायनिक प्रकृति या रासायनिक पहचअन में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता है। इसके विपरीत रासायनिक परिवर्तन होने की दशा में पदार्थों की संरचना बदल जाती है - एक या अधिक पदार्थ मिलकर या टूटकर नये पदार्थ बनाते हैं।कभी-कभी यह कहना कठिन होता है कि परिवर्तन भौतिक है या रासायनिक। उदाहरण के लिये किसी लवण को पानी में घोलने पर उस लवण के रासायनिक बन्ध (केमिकल बॉण्ड) टूट जाते हैं; फिर भी इसे प्रायः भौतिक परिवर्तन ही कहा जाता है। कुछ लोग कहते हैं कि रासायनिक परिवर्तन में परमाणुओं का पुनर्व्यवस्था होती है, किन्तु बहुत से भौतिक परिवर्तनों में भी परमाणुओं की पुनःव्यवस्था देखने को मिलती है। यहाँ तक कि बहुत से रासायनिक परिवर्तन व्युत्क्रमणीय (reversible) नहीं हैं जबकि बहुत से भौतिक परिवर्तन व्युत्क्रमणीय हैं।उदाहरण के लिए, पानी को वाष्पित करने की अनुमति देकर पानी में भंग चीनी को पुनर्प्राप्त किया जा सकता है।
