Tungsten is used for the manufacture of the filament of an electric bulb due to its high melting point of 3422 °C.
विधुत बल्ब में एक स्प्रिंग की तरह की तार होती है जो की लाल तप्त हो जाती है और तब प्रकाश उत्पन्न होता है यह फिलामेंट कहलाता है वैसे विधुत बल्ब को बोलचाल की भाषा में बल्ब कह देते है इसका नाम उद्दीप्त दीपक या इन्कैंडिसेंट लैम्प (incandescent lamp) होता है |
जब इस फिलामेंट तार में विधुत प्रवाहित होती है तो तब यह गरम होकर प्रकश देने लगता है।
फिलामेंट बनने के लिए उच्च गलनांक वाली धातु की आवश्यकता होती है |
यदि कम गलनांक वाली धातु का प्रयोग कर लिया जाए तो वो पिंघल जाएगी
टंग्स्टन Tungsten धातु का प्रयोग किया जाता है ,जिसका गलनांक 3140 डीग्री सेंटीग्रेट होता है और जबकि फिलामेंट को चमकने के लिए 2700 डीग्री सेंटीग्रेट तापमान की जरूरत होती है |
फिलामेन्ट को काँच के बल्ब के अन्दर इसलिये रखा जाता है ताकि अतितप्त फिलामेन्ट तक वायुमण्डलीय आक्सीजन न पहुँच पाये और इस तरह क्रिया करके फिलामेन्ट को जला ना सके।
