Excretion of average urine in the adult human body is around 1.5 liters of urine per day. About 91-96% of urine consist of water.

नेफ्रॉन या वृक्क नलिका में रुधिर से छनकर आए जल एवं शेष उत्सर्जी पदार्थों के मिश्रण को मूत्र कहते हैं। मनुष्य का मूत्र पारदर्शी एवं हल्के पीले रंग का द्रव होता है। इसका पीला रंग हीमोग्लोबिन के अपघटन से निर्मित यूरोक्रोम (Urochrome) नामक वर्णक (Pigment) के कारण होता है। मूत्र के गंध का कारण इसमें उपस्थित कार्बनिक पदार्थ होता है। एक सामान्य व्यक्ति में 24 घंटे में लगभग 1.5 लीटर मूत्र बनता है। सामान्यतः मूत्र की मात्रा मनुष्य द्वारा ग्रहण किये गए जल की मात्रा, भोजन की प्रकृति उनकी शारीरिक एवं मानसिक स्थिति तथा वातावरणीय ताप पर निर्भर करती है। सामान्यतया ताजा मूत्र अम्लीय प्रकृति का होता है। इसका pH मान 4.5 से 8.6 के मध्य होता है। इसका आपेक्षिक घनत्व जल से थोड़ा अधिक होता है। एक सामान्य व्यक्ति के मूत्र में जल (96%), यूरिया (2%), प्रोटीन, वसा, शर्करा एवं दूसरे कोलयड्स (1.3%), यूरिक अम्ल (0.5%) के साथ अत्यल्प मात्रा मे क्रियेटिनिन, सोडियम, पोटैशियम, कैल्सियम, मैग्नीशियम, क्लोरीन, सल्फेट, फॉस्फेट, सीसा, अमोनिया, आर्सेनिक, आयोडीन, नाइट्रोजन आदि पाए जाते हैं।
