Class 8th, Science, N.C.E.R.T Chapter -7 CONSERVATION ONSERVATION OFOF PLANTS LANTS AND AND ANIMALS - Summary

CONSERVATION OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS

Deforestation and its causes

Deforestation-the deforestation meaning

is clearing of forest or cutting of forest

for the land which is being used for other

purposes.

Deforestation is threatening for

life on the earth whether it's for

animals or for plants it is very important

for the survival of humankind or living

being to preserve the forest.

Causes for the deforestations are:

  • Procuring land for cultivation or farming.

  • For making houses of factory.

  • For making furniture and use of wood as fuel.

Natural cause for deforestation are

  • forest fire

  • severe drought.

Consequences of deforestation on earth are:

  • It will increase the temperature and

 pollution level on the earth.

It also increases the level of carbon

dioxide on the earth because trees

use carbon dioxide for making food

In photosynthesis, if  trees are less

carbon dioxide would increase in the

atmosphere which traps the heat rays

reflected by the earth, due to which

 temperature would increase.

This will need to global warming

and disturb the water cycle and may

reduce rainfall which would cost droughts

 on the earth.

  • Deforestation also leads to change

 in physical quality properties of

soil because a tree holds the top

most layer of the soil which is fertile

in nature because of Humus and

fewer trees lead to soil erosion of

the top most layer of soil will lead

 to desertification of Earth.

  • It will also decrease the water

holding the power of soil. The moment

of water from soil that is from surface to

ground would decrease which results

In less quantity of underground water

This will also result in flooding of rivers.

Conservation of forest and wildlife

Biosphere is that part of the earth in which

all living organisms exist or which supports life.

Biological diversity or biodiversity, refers  to the

variety of organisms existing on the earth,

 their interrelationships and their relationship

with the environment. And with each other.

To protect our flora and fauna and their

habitats, protected areas called wildlife

sanctuaries, national parks and biosphere

reserves have been outlined by governments.

 Plantation, cultivation, grazing, felling trees,

Hunting and poaching are prohibited there.

Wildlife Sanctuary :  Areas where

animals are protected from any

disturbance to them and their habitat.

Mostly the wildlife sanctuaries are open

for human beings and is a smaller

 area than the National park.

National Park : Areas reserved for wild

life where they can freely use the habitats

 and natural resources.

Biosphere Reserve : Large areas of protected

land for conservation of wildlife, plant and

animal resources and traditional life of the

tribal living in the area. Human visits are not

allowed at all. Only employees or government

officials related to National parks can visit .

National parks are huge in area compared to

 wildlife sanctuaries.

Only the government makes policy

rules and methods to protect and conserve

all wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and

 bio reserves etc.These are protected

areas for the conservation of different

kinds of plants and animals present in it.

Flora and Fauna

The plants and animals found in a

particular areas are termed flora

and fauna or native habitats of

that area like human beings.

Endemic Species

Endemic species are those species

of plants and animals which are found

exclusively in a particular area.

They are not naturally found anywhere else

A particular type of animal or plant may be

endemic to a zone, a state or a country.

Examples are:

Endemic flora(plants and trees) of

the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve:

  • Sal &

Wild mango

Endemic fauna(animals & birds)  of this area

Bison,

Indian giant squirrel

The destruction of their habitat,

 increasing population and introduction

of new species may affect the natural

habitat of endemic species and endanger

 their existence.

Species is a group of population which

are capable of interbreeding. This means

that the members of a species can give

birth to their offspring only with the members

of their own species and not with members

of other species. Members of a species have

common characteristics. Example a tiger is a

species which can give birth to a tiger with only

a tiger cannot give birth to lion because lion is

different species

 Wildlife Sanctuary

  Wildlife Sanctuary forests provide protection

and suitable living conditions to wild animals.

People living in wildlife sanctuaries are allowed

to do certain activities such as grazing by their

livestock, collecting medicinal plants, firewood, etc.

Due to continuous poaching or killing of

animals, it also made wildlife sanctuaries

sometimes unsafe.

National Park

These reserves are large and diverse

enough to protect whole sets of ecosystems

. They preserve flora, fauna, landscape

and historic objects of an area. Satpura

National Park is the first Reserve Forest of India.

The finest Indian teak is found in this forest.

Human activities such as grazing, poaching,

hunting, capturing of animals or collection

of firewood, medicinal plants, etc. are not allowed.

Rock shelters are also found inside the

 Satpura National Park. These are

evidences of prehistoric human life

in these jungles. These give us an

idea of the life of primitive people.

Rock paintings are found in these

shelters. A total of 55 rock shelters

 have been identified in Pachmarhi

 Biosphere Reserve. Figures of

 animals and men fighting, hunting,

 dancing and playing musical instruments

 are depicted in these paintings.

Many tribals still live in the area.

Project Tiger was launched by the government

to protect the tigers in the country.

The objective of this project was to

 ensure the survival and maintenance

of the tiger population in the country.

This program was launched due to the

decreasing number of tigers in our country.

Those animals whose numbers are

decreasing continuously or the population

of particular species are getting less and are

 called endangered animals. These animals

 face the danger of extinction.

Survival animals have become difficult

because of disturbances in their natural

habitat.  small animals are much more

in danger of becoming extinct than the

 bigger animals.

Killing snakes, frogs, lizards, bats and

 Owls are indirectly hurting ourselves

because their role in the ecosystem

cannot be ignored. They form part of

food chains and food webs,

An ecosystem is made of all the plants,

animals and microorganisms in an area

along with non-living components such as

 climate, soil, river deltas etc.

Red Data Book is the source book which keeps a record of all the endangered animals and plants. Red Data Book is maintained internationally by an organisation. India also maintains a Red Data Book for plants and animals found in India.

Migration

Migratory birds have flown here from

other parts of the world. Migratory

birds fly to far away areas every year

during a particular time because of

climatic changes. They fly to lay eggs

as the weather in their natural habitat

 becomes very cold and inhospitable.

Recycling of paper

Manufacturing of paper is also one of the

reason of deforestation or tree cutting

Every year thousands of trees  cut down

for manufacturing the paper plus chemicals

used in manufacturing the paper are very harmful.

Therefore one should save the paper. A single paper

can be recycled or reused for at least seven Times.

Saving single paper results in saving thousands of trees

from cutting.

Reforestation

Reforestation is restocking of the destroyed

forests by planting new trees. The planted

trees should generally be of the same species

which were found in that forest.

Reforestation can take place naturally also.

If the deforested area is left undisturbed,

it reestablishes itself. In natural reforestation

there is no role of human beings.

India the Forest (Conservation) Act- This act

is aimed at preservation and conservation

of natural forests and meeting the basic needs

of the people living in or near the forests.
