क्यों चमगादड़ अंधेरी रात के दौरान उड़ सकता है और शिकार भी कर सकता है. ?

 Bats are a fascinating group of animals. They are one of the few mammals that can use ultrasonic sound to navigate. As they fly, make an ultrasonic (shouting) sound. The returning echoes give the bats information about anything that is ahead of them, including the speed and size of an insect and which way it is going. This system of finding prey is called echolocation-locating things by their echoes.

चमगादड़ आकाश में उड़ने वाला एक स्तनधारी प्राणी है, जो अपनी 1००० से भी अधिक प्रजातियों के साथ स्तनधारियों के दूसरे सबसे बडे़ कुल का निर्माण करता है। ये पूर्ण रूप से निशाचर होते हैं और पेड़ों की डाली अथवा अँधेरी गुफाओं के अन्दर उल्टा लटके रहते हैं।  इनको दो समूहों मे विभाजित किया जाता है, पहला समूह फलभक्षी बडे़ चमगादड़ का होता है, जो देख कर और सूंघ कर अपना भोजन ढूंढते हैं जबकि दूसरा समूह् कीटभक्षी छोटे चमगादड़ का होता है,

यह  प्रतिध्वनि (अल्ट्रासोनिक तरंगों) द्वारा स्थिति निर्धारण विधि के द्वारा अपना रास्ता और भोजन तलाशते हैं।  चमगादड एक विशेष प्रकार की ध्वनि तरंगे उत्पन्न करते है। यह ध्वनि तरंगे रास्ते मे आये किसी अवरोध या किट-पतंगे से टकराकर वापिस लौट आता है। इस प्रतिध्वनि के आधार अपने शिकार या अवरोध की पहचान कर लेते है।
