Monazite is an important ore for Thorium, Lanthanum and Cerium. India, Madagascar and South Africa have large deposits of monazite sands.

थोरियम धातु की खोज 1828 ई में बर्ज़ीलियस ने थोराइट अयस्क में की थी। यद्यपि इसके अनेक अयस्क ज्ञात हैं, परंतु मोनेज़ाइट(monazite) इसका सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत हैं, जिसमें थोरियम तथा अन्य विरल मृदाओं के फॉस्फेट रहते हैं।

संसार में मोनेज़ाइट का सबसे बड़ा भंडार भारत के केरल राज्य में हैं। बिहार प्रदेश में भी थोरियम अयस्क की उपस्थिति ज्ञात हुई है। इनके अतिरिक्त मोनेज़ाइट अमरीका, आस्ट्रलिया, ब्राज़िल और मलाया में भी प्राप्त है।

मौनेज़ाइट को सांद्र सल्फ्यूरिक अम्ल की प्रक्रिया कर आंशिक क्षारीय विलयन मिलाने से थोरियम फॉस्फेट का अवक्षेप बनता है। इसको सल्फ्यूरिक या हाइड्रोक्लोरिक अम्ल में घुला कर फिर फॉस्फेट अवक्षिप्त करते हैं। इस क्रिया को दोहराने पर थोरियम का शुद्ध फॉस्फेट मिलता है।
