पीतल मिश्र धातु है, जो ताँबे और जस्ते के संयोग से बनती है। ताँबे में जस्ता डालने से ताँबे का सामर्थ्य, चौमड़पन और कठोरता बढ़ती है। यह वृद्धि 36 प्रतिशत जस्ते तक नियमित रूप से होती है, पर बाद में केवल सामर्थ्य में वृद्धि अधिक स्पष्ट देखी जाती है। पीतल में 2 से लेकर 36 प्रतिशत तक जस्ता रहता है।

ताँबा जस्ते के साथ दो निश्चित यौगिक Cu2 Zn3) और Cu Zn बनाता है और दो किस्म के ठोस विलयन बनते हैं, जिन्हें ऐल्फा-विलयन और बीटा-विलयन कहते हैं।
