Once there was a forest where a bird lives with her 2 new born babies, as she was a mother so she took care of them. One day a very strong and big Storm hit the forest. It was so strong, it uprooted many trees. Tree on which the bird lives also got uprooted and she died while her babies were blown by strong wind and came down to other places. One baby bird fell down near a cave where a gang of robbers lived. The other landed outside a rishi’s ashram a little distance away.
On another day, the king of the country came to the forest to hunt and he chased a deer who took him to a dense forest. King lost his way and came down to another part of the forest in front of robber's cave. The king got tired so he stopped for some moments in the front cave under a tree on which a big brown bird was sitting . From there he heard the voices of someone to loot his horse and jewellery.
The king got out from there and went to rishi's ashram on the way. The king again saw a big brown bird which was similar to the other he saw there at the cave and he was amazed. This bird welcomed him and told him to rest. Then Rishi came back , He said they both are siblings bit due to growing up at different places in different environments that is why they are different from each other. After all, one is known by the company one keeps.
One grew up at a robber's place and he always listened to them. So always repeats what they say and thus the bird grew up here so he always preaches what he listens here. The bird at the ashram told the king- the other bird he saw at the cave is his brother and he doesn't talk to him anymore due to different behaviours.
Questions and answers
Q1 How did the two baby birds get separated?
Ans-The two baby birds lived with their mother in a nest in a tall and shady tree. One day, there was a big storm with thunder, lightning and rain. A big, heavy branch hit the nest and killed the mother bird. The strong wind blew the two baby birds away to the other side of the forest and separated them from each other.
Q2-Where did each of them find a home?
Ans-One of the baby birds came down near a cave where a gang of robbers lived. The other baby bird landed outside a rishi’s ashram a little distance away. Thus, they found two different homes.
Q3-What did the first bird say to the stranger?
Ans-The first bird saw the stranger i.e. the King. He called the robbers to come quickly and rob the King of his jewels and his horse. The bird had indirectly warned the stranger of the consequences of sitting near the cave.
Q4-What did the second bird say to him?
Ans-The second bird welcomed the King to the ashram. He requested the stranger to go inside the ashram, take some rest and make himself comfortable. He further added that the first bird was his brother who had made friends with robbers, so he talked like them.
Q5-How did the rishi explain the different ways in which the birds behaved?
Ans-The king was surprised about the difference in behaviour between the two birds. The rishi explained that the first bird imitated the same words that he heard from the robbers, whereas the second bird repeated the words that he had always heard at the ashram. This implies that the different ways of behaviour between the two birds was the result of the company in which they lived.
