NCERT Class 6th English Chapter 4 The Old-Clock Shop,

 The old clock shop.

It was Christmas Eve. Everyone has closed their shops and gone back to their homes, but an old clock shop was opened in Salt Lake City, USA. The owner Ray who is deaf was working on the last watch he sold today and about to close his shop when his shop's door was opened by a man and another of his companions stood outside the door to keep watch.

Ray understood these were no customers and had some other intentions still he remained calm and asked what he required from the man by writing on pad. The man got surprised and said something to his friend standing outside while manage to see the other man with  his pistol, still he remained calm and again Ray asked how he could help them.

Then again Ray asked him Has he come to pick up a clock or watch? So the man told him in action he needs a loan against his watch he is wearing. Ray gives loans to needy people who came to borrow against their watches. Ray looked at his watch, it was not special, still he gave him 50 dollars. Man said thank you by expressions and told he will be back soon to take back his watch.

This story ended with a beautiful note of ‘Peace on earth, goodwill towards all’ was felt by the three men who stood in the old-clock shop.

Q1- What made Ray think the visitor was not really a shopper?

Ans-Ray’s old, wise eyes understood that the visitor who arrived at a late hour, was not really a shopper. There was no friendly

ness in the visitor’s eyes.

Q2- Why do you think he had come to the shop?

Ans I think he had come to the shop to rob the shop. He was in urgent need of money.

Q3- How did Ray communicate with him?

Ans- As Ray was deaf, he communicated with his visitor through a notepad and a pen.

Q4- What do you think the man said to his friend who waited at the door?

Ans- The man would have said to his friend who waited at the door that the shop owner was deaf.

Q5-. Ray was not a pawnbroker. Why then did he lend money to people in exchange for their old watches and clocks?

Ans- Ray was a very kind person. He was not a pawnbroker, someone who lends money on security of an item. But he always helped people in need. That’s why he lent money to people in exchange for their old watches and clocks.

Q 6- “The watch was nothing special and yet had great powers.” In what sense did it have ‘great powers’?

Ans- “The watch was nothing special and yet had great powers. It had great powers in the sense that it saved Ray from any kind of physical injuries he would have had to face from the late-hour visitors. Also, it saved the visitors from committing a robbery. They needed money and they got it by keeping the watch as a security.

Q7- Do you think the man would ever come back to pick up the watch?

Ans-No, I don’t think the older man would ever come back to pick up the watch. He received more money than the watch was worth.

Q8- When did “the unfriendly face” of the visitor turn truly friendly?

Ans-The unfriendly face of the visitor turned truly friendly when he got a fifty-dollar note for his ordinary watch. Both, Ray and the older man, knew that the watch was not worth that much money. So, the older man genuinely felt obliged for Ray’s kindness.
