 The shepherd's treasure


It is the story of a poor, uneducated yet great and wise shepherd who lived in Iran. He was so poor that he didn't have his own house. He didn't study but he is a very wise person. He understands people's sorrow and problems, due to this quality he became very famous and people used to come to him for advice.


यह एक गरीब, अशिक्षित लेकिन महान और बुद्धिमान चरवाहे की कहानी है जो ईरान में रहता था। वह इतना गरीब था कि उसका अपना घर भी नहीं था। उसने पढ़ाई नहीं की लेकिन वह बहुत बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति है। वह लोगों के दुख-दर्द को समझता है, इसी गुण के कारण वह बहुत प्रसिद्ध हुआ और लोग उसके पास सलाह लेने आते थे।


His fragrance of wisdom spread across places and after hearing about him, the king also wanted to meet him in disguise as a shepherd and he went to him. Seeing a visitor coming towards his cave. Wise man welcomed him and asked him to stay and rest. Wise man also shared his meal with the king. King was very impressed and delighted with the wise man's hospitality.


उसके ज्ञान की सुगंध चारों ओर फैल गई और उसके बारे में सुनकर राजा भी चरवाहे के वेश में उससे मिलना चाहता था और वह उसके पास गया। एक आगंतुक को अपनी गुफा की ओर आते देख। बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति ने उसका स्वागत किया और उसे रुकने और आराम करने के लिए कहा। बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति ने भी राजा के साथ अपना भोजन साझा किया। राजा बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति के आतिथ्य से बहुत प्रभावित और प्रसन्न हुए।


Now the king told him he wants to leave and the wise man also recognised him that he is king. The king got astonished and offered him the governor's position. He accepted this offer. Yet he is very humble and polite after getting this position. Seeing this governor of other provinces become very jealous of him and they started making stories against him.


अब राजा ने उससे कहा कि वह जाना चाहता है और बुद्धिमान ने उसे पहचान लिया। राजा चकित हो गया और उसे भेंट की। उन्होंने इस प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया। फिर भी वह इस पद को प्राप्त करने के बाद बहुत विनम्र और विनम्र हैं। अन्य प्रांतों के इस राज्यपाल को देखकर वे उससे बहुत ईर्ष्या करने लगे और वे उसके खिलाफ कहानियाँ बनाने लगे।


These governors fill the ears of the king with dishonesty stories of the wise man. They say he keeps money aside from collection in a secret box. Earlier king didn't give any importance to these stories but lately he also believed in these sayings.


ये राज्यपाल राजा के कानों में बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति की बेईमानी की कहानियों से भर जाते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि वह पैसे को संग्रह से अलग एक गुप्त बॉक्स में रखता है। पहले राजा इन कहानियों को कोई महत्व नहीं देते थे लेकिन हाल ही में उन्होंने भी इन बातों पर विश्वास किया।


So one day he summoned the wise man to the palace. The king was very angry and he asked the wise man what he keeps in his iron chest which he carries always with him. Then the wise man opened his chest and showed everyone, it's only an old blanket. He said this blanket is his old in every situation and every time it remains with him and he asked the king if he wants to take it he can. After seeing this fellow governor got embarrassed and the king got more pleased and happy. He made the wise man governor of the bigger district.


इसलिए एक दिन उसने उस बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को महल में बुलाया। राजा बहुत क्रोधित हुआ और उसने उस बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति से पूछा कि वह अपने लोहे के संदूक में क्या रखता है जिसे वह हमेशा अपने साथ रखता है। तब उस बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति ने अपना सीना खोलकर सबको दिखाया, यह तो केवल एक पुराना कंबल है। उसने कहा कि यह कंबल हर हाल में उसका पुराना है और हर बार यह उसके पास रहता है और उसने राजा से पूछा कि क्या वह इसे लेना चाहता है तो वह ले सकता है। यह देखकर साथी राज्यपाल शर्मिंदा हो गए और राजा अधिक प्रसन्न और प्रसन्न हुए। उसने बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को बड़े जिले का राज्यपाल बनाया।

Q2-Who visited the shepherd one day, and why?

Ans-The king of Iran had come to visit the wise shepherd when he heard about his wisdom and friendly nature. The king disguised himself as a shepherd and riding on a mule, came to visit the humble shepherd.

Q3-Why did the other governors grow jealous of the shepherd?

Ans-The king was pleased at the wise shepherd’s warm reception and appointed him as the governor of a small district. People loved and honoured him for his wisdom, sympathy and goodness. His fame spread far and wide throughout the country. So, the governors of other provinces grew terribly jealous of him and began to talk to the king against him.

Q4-Why was the new governor called to the palace?

Ans-The governors of other provinces were extremely jealous of the newly appointed governor who was renowned for his wisdom, sympathy and goodness. They poisoned the king’s ears against the humble governor and reported that he was dishonest. They complained that he kept for himself part of the money in an iron chest that he collected as tax from the people. Hearing all these, finally the king called the new governor to the palace and ordered him to explain why he always carried an iron chest along with him.

Q5-Why was everyone delighted to see the iron chest on the camel’s back?

Ans-Everyone in the palace was delighted to see the iron chest on the camel’s back when the new governor arrived because they thought that the iron chest contained gold, silver and jewels in it. They knew if the king found the treasure inside the chest, he would dismiss the new governor of his duties and punish him for his bad deeds.

  1. Ans-The iron chest contained an old blanket inside it.

  2. The shepherd always carried an old blanket in an iron chest because it was his oldest friend. He said that it would still protect him, if some day the king took away his position and power.

  3. Yes, it is an ideal example of the shepherd’s humility, wisdom and goodness.

Q7-How did the king reward the new governor?

Ans-The king was extremely pleased with the new governor’s humility, wisdom and honesty. He immediately rewarded the wise man and promoted him to the position of a governor of a bigger district the same day.
